Sompo Japan Has Increased Both its Capacity and Performance Together with EMC and NGN

Sompo Japan Insurance has renewed its business continuity systems thanks to NGN’s consultancy and EMC solutions. With this project, the Company has increased its data storage capacity two times more and its performance four times more.

One of the leading insurance companies in the world, Sompo Japan Insurance’s System and Network Planning and Support Manager, Murat Koçoğlu reports that “In parallel with the growth of our company, our data and performance requirement for processing data increases with great pace. We have started to search for alternative solutions to meet our increasing needs. As we previously used EMC products, we basically wanted to see the new solutions of EMC. At this point, NGN supported us substantially. As a result of our assessments, we decided on the new data storage system of EMC.” Sompo Japan became the first customer of EMC in Turkey that uses the new generation VNX8000 system from the top segment storage systems of the company. Koçoğlu, states that several features of VNX storages simplify their works very much: “We can say that the most impressive of them is auto-tiering (smart data layering) feature because when you work with very big size data, different performance needs emerge depending on data using habits and frequency at different times. Some data always requires very high performance while some data does not always need this high performance. It is very difficult to make this distribution manually. Auto-tiering technology of EMC provided a solution to this problem. Thanks to this feature, data became movable automatically between the fast and slow disks depending on the required performance. Thanks to this automatic distribution, we can both get the high performance required and obtain cost advantage. With Fast Cache technology, we can respond to requests from the server side faster; we have obtained a substantial performance increase.”

Koçoğlu comments on the project as follows: “This project was started for the performance and capacity increase need in our storage system. It was converted to an end-to-end solution together with NGN. In addition to updating the storage system, we updated almost all products and applications in the SAN infrastructure with new versions. These include business continuity and monitoring solutions of EMC. We continue using EMC Recover Point solution for many years. We ensure that the copies of database fields are retrieved within seconds and transfer this data to test servers, and then tests are performed in a very short time. We use the line more efficiently in the replication that we make by using the singularization and compaction features of the RecoverPoint between the headquarters and disaster recovery center. Another advantage of RecoverPoint is that it enables us to return to the version required within seconds according to disaster scenarios. With this project, we did not only activate the new storage system but also redesigned all business continuity projects. At this point, NGN made substantial contribution to us.”

Koçoğlu continued as follows: We keep the system interruptions at a minimum as same as server rebooting times during the project and can transfer all data in the old data systems to the new storage system almost uninterruptedly. Mehmet Erdoğan, a NGN System Solution Engineer who made the project installation, states that they tried to perform an uninterrupted procedure by taking the sensitivities of Sompo Japan into consideration and that they are happy that they implemented the project successfully.

Sompo Japan Insurance, which previously implemented security projects with NGN and used the storage systems of EMC, is very satisfied to implement their new projects. Reporting that they completed the project without any major interruptions and problems, Koçoğlu states that “With our new investment, we increased the data storage capacity twice while increasing the performance of the infrastructure almost four times.”

Cem M. Kotanoğlu, Sales Director of NGN in Charge of Finance Sector, indicates that they have been cooperating with Sompo Japan for a long time, and completes his words by saying “Identifying and designing the requirements and future plans of Sompo Japan together is very valuable for us. We, as NGN, will continue to provide all kinds of support with our skilled engineer staff and experience.”
