Environment-Friendly Data Center Star of Bosphorus Has Been Awarded LEED Gold Certificate

Star of Bosphorus, the most advanced data center in Turkey with its uninterrupted access, unique facility structure, experienced team and unrivaled technologies, has received another significant international certification. Star of Bosphorus has been awarded the LEED Gold Certificate, which is the most prestigious green building certification around the world.

Star of Bosphorus operates over 2.000 standard cabinets in 5.000 sqm white space with its 16 MW total power in accordance with the Tier II Design and Facility standards. Star of Bosphorus makes a difference with its structural seismic isolation designed to reduce the risk of earthquakes, which is a first in Turkey and one of the few systems in the world, and offers its clients flexibility to receive services from any desired carriers thanks to its carrier-neutral structure.

LEED Certificate developed by the US Green Building Council is an internationally-recognized rating system that assesses green buildings in terms of their designs, constructions, operations and continuity. Star of Bosphorus, which was planning to obtain a LEED Gold Certificate, was assessed in accordance with the criteria such as ‘‘Sustainability Areas’’, ‘‘Water Efficiency’’, “Energy and Atmosphere”, “Materials and Sources”, “Interior Space Quality”, “Innovation” and “Regional Priority Credits”. Star of Bosphorus complied with all criteria successfully and was awarded the LEED Gold Certificate in the environment-friendly green building status.

Ufuk Yaşıbeyli, Assistant General Manager for Technology at NGN, reported that they developed an environment-friendly project that is sensitive to the ecologic system in accordance with their social and environmental responsibilities to ensure a sustainable future, and underlined the environment-friendly sensitivity of the Company and also added: “From the very beginning, we have designed the Star of Bosphorus Data Center based on our awareness of implementing an environment-friendly project. LEED Gold Certificate is one of the most important indicators of our sensitivity and we will continue to exist in the heart of sustainability and security by maintaining our environmentally-conscious approach’’.

Sustainable land and location

The project was designed based on the principle of creating a healthy and ecologic environment, and the plants which are suitable for the climate and soil texture of the region were used on the land of the facility. Another purpose of the project was to reduce carbon emissions.

Energy efficiency

Equipped by the state of the art mechanical systems and designed by considering the aspects of protecting the nature and environment, Star of Bosphorus ensures power saving with 10% reduction in the use of active cooling as well as carbon footprint optimization, and implements environment-friendly operations thanks to the dynamic Diesel Rotary UPSs (DRUPS) with battery-less design.

Water efficiency

For landscaping design of the facility, plant species which are suitable for the climate of the region and which consume very low level of water were chosen for the facility. The rainwater collected is used for irrigation to ensure saving on landscape water consumption.

What is LEED Gold Certificate?

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certificate is the most preferred environment-friendly building certificate in the world and in Turkey. LEED Certificate can be obtained for all building types based on various assessments such as interior space quality, energy and water efficiency and sustainable areas of the LEED Certificate System. As a result of the rating made by the LEED AP according to the characteristics of buildings, buildings are awarded a LEED Certificate with one of the certified, silver, gold and platinum certificate levels.
